To tax (from the Latin taxo; "I estimate", which in turn is from tangō; "I touch") is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state or the functional equivalent of a state such that failure to pay is punishable by law.

Taxes are also imposed by many subnational entities. Taxes consist of direct tax or indirect tax, and may be paid in money or as its labour equivalent (often but not always unpaid). A tax may be defined as a "pecuniary burden laid upon individuals or property to support the government […] a payment exacted by legislative authority." A tax "is not a voluntary payment or donation, but an enforced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority" and is "any contribution imposed by government […] whether under the name of toll, tribute, tallage, gabel, impost, duty, custom, excise, subsidy, aid, supply, or other name."

In modern taxation systems, taxes are levied in money, but in-kind and corvée taxation are characteristic of traditional or pre-capitalist states and their functional equivalents. The method of taxation and the government expenditure of taxes raised is often highly debated in politics and economics. Tax collection is performed by a government agency such as Canada Revenue Agency, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States, or Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in the UK. When taxes are not fully paid, civil penalties (such as fines or forfeiture) or criminal penalties (such as incarceration) may be imposed on the non-paying entity or individual.

Why should the American taxpayer have to bail out people who spent their paychecks on?
Q. Crack and Alcohol, Obama wants the taxpayer to pay the mortgages of the people who a large percentage of them could have made their payments if they had chosen to over the drugs and alcohol? If i did not get reported two or three times a day i would think the Obama suporters had all left the site. I have not forgotten anyone but i know people who could have made their payments but the drugs and alcohol were the most important.

A. How true.. Let's just even look at cigarettes... A married couple that both smoke 2 packs a day of Marlboro's will in one month blow about $600 bucks... That would go a long way to pay a mortgage and keep gas in the car.. But whining and wanting the handout is sooo much easier...

What is the maximum Section 179 the taxpayer can elect?
Q. "A taxpayer places in service $590,000 of personal property in 2007. The maximum Section 179 the taxpayer can elect in 2007 is:" I looked it up and came up with 125k, but I'm not sure it's right given the numbers.

A. The easiest way to do this is to complete a 2007 Form 4562. If you do, you'll find the answer is $35,000. The $125,000 limit is reduced by the cost of section 179 property placed in service that exceeds $500,000. $125, 000 - $90,000 = $35,000.

Has anyone had any success negotiating debt with the IRS using their Taxpayer Advocacy Office?
Q. My debt is 8 yrs old, and I want to have it declared Uncollectable, then use the Taxpayer Advocacy personnell to help me file an Offer In Compromise, or attempt to have the debt reduced to an amount I can handle with a payment plan. I owe over $40,000. Is this possible? Help!

A. The Taxpayer Advocate only handles cases where the system has broken down. It does not provide ordinary taxpayer assistance. If you have an account that is 8 years old and in currently not collectible status, unless there is some compelling reason, you should probably just leave it alone.
