The Canada Revenue Agency was previously known as the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) until a federal government reorganization in December 2003 when it was decided to split the organization's customs and revenue responsibilities into separate organizations. Since then, Canada Border Services Agency The Canada Border Services Agency (French: Agence des services frontaliers du Canada - ASFC) is a federal law enforcement agency that is responsible for border enforcement and customs services is part of the Public Safety Canada Public Safety Canada, formerly known as Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada , legally incorporated as the federal Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for protecting Canadians and helping to maintain a peaceful and safe society portfolio to handle customs responsibilities.

It was also referred to as Revenue Canada under the Federal Identity Program The Federal Identity Program is the Canadian government's corporate identity program. Administration of taxation laws

The CRA administers most individual and corporate income taxes in Canada. With the exception of Quebec Quebec is the second most populous province, after Ontario. Most inhabitants live in urban areas near the Saint Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City, the capital. English-speaking communities and English-language institutions are concentrated in the west of the island of Montreal but are also significantly present in the Outaouais, the provincial individual income tax, the CRA Administers all personal and trust tax returns. CRA also administers all corporate income taxes in Canada, except for Quebec and Alberta provincial corporate income taxes. The Ontario Ministry of Finance also partially administers the provincial corporate income tax for tax years ended prior to January 1, 2009, however administrative functions are being increasingly transferred to CRA. [1].

The CRA administers the Goods and Services Tax The Canadian Goods and Services Tax (French: Taxe sur les produits et services, TPS) is a multi-level value-added tax introduced in Canada on January 1, 1991, by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and finance minister Michael Wilson. The GST replaced a hidden 13.5% Manufacturers' Sales Tax (MST); Mulroney claimed the GST was implemented because the MST (GST) (the Canadian federal value added tax Value added tax is similar to a sales tax. It is a tax on the estimated market value added to a product or material at each stage of its manufacture or distribution, ultimately passed on to the consumer. Maurice Lauré, Joint Director of the French Tax Authority, the Direction générale des impôts, was first to introduce VAT on April 10, 1954,) in all provinces except Quebec, where Revenu Quebec administers both the QST and GST. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador, where the GST is replaced with a Harmonized Sales Tax In Canada, the Harmonized Sales Tax combines the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Provincial Sales Tax (PST) into a single sales tax. This changes the PST from a cascading tax system, which has been abandoned by most economies throughout the world, to a value added tax like the GST which is administered by CRA. On March 26, 2009, the Government of Ontario proposed that the Ontario Retail Sales Tax be harmonized with the GST on July 1, 2010. Although not explicitly announced, it is likely this harmonized tax will be administered by CRA.[2]. The Government of British Columbia has announced that it will harmonize its Provincial Sales Tax effective July 1, 2010, at which time the newly aligned tax will be administered by the CRA

Criticism

The Canada Revenue Agency is inconsistent in regard to breaks for delinquent In other cases, a delinquent is a person who fails to pay a debt or other financial obligation, like a mortgage. Failure to cure a delinquent payment can result in repossession or foreclosure. Accounts that are not current are also known as delinquent accounts tax payers, so much that there is a risk that taxpayers could begin to "shop around" to other tax offices for the best deal[3].

The Canada Revenue Agency is also inconsistent when compensating taxpayers for mistakes. A recent case being Irvin Leroux who lost $4.5 million in assets due to a Canada Revenue Agency mistake[4].
